Woking News & Mail 01 December 2021
The most important thing in life is people. And if you drop in to visit a Birchgrove retirement community you will discover we not only create beautiful self-contained homes for people in later life, we spend an equal amount of time creating a warm and welcoming community environment designed to enhance the quality of life for everyone who lives with us.
We spend a lot of time listening. Our residents often tell us that later life has given them perspective about what really matters in life and it's not the material things we clutter our lives with. What really matters, and we judge our lives by, is the quality and depth of our relationships with friends, family and loved ones and being able to spend precious time with them. For many of our residents they also rediscover a connection to causes or ignite interests and pursuits that provide meaning and fulfilment - for them as individuals, and in most cases, to also benefit others.
Birchgrove's resident David moved to Woodbank Apartments, Woking, 6 months ago with a similar story to tell. As a keen fundraiser, David was looking for a new challenge that would help others with the new freedom and joy he had experienced since moving to Birchgrove.
David said: “I was living in an apartment in Leatherhead, Surrey, but didn’t enjoy living there, so I had to think very seriously about moving to a place that I could be properly supported. I read a very good article about Birchgrove in the local paper which piqued my interest. We came to have a look around and had lunch. Then the sales advisor came to my home for a meeting. I decided to move as soon as I could because I liked it so much.
"I now live in a one-bedroom apartment with a balcony that I enjoy sitting at My family and friends visit regularly and often join me for lunch in the on-site restaurant - the food is excellent! I feel so settled and part of the community here that I wanted to do something meaningful to help others.
"The staff are amazing and helped set me up with cancer support charity - Macmillan Cancer Support - to take part in their Brave the Shave event this November. I'll be shaving my head to raise money for Macmillan because I think their nurses do such a fantastic job and I'd like people to support me to hit my target”
The Birchgrove customer first mindset and flexible approach means we never forget that we're here to assist our residents to get as much, or as little, from each day as they wish.
